Hans Scheirl / Visual Artist

Born in Salzburg in 1956, Hans Scheirl studied restoration at the Academy (now: University) of Fine Arts Vienna. From 1978 to 1985 he was part of the performative music and sound experiments of "8 or 9" and "Sinister Omen". Between 1979 and 1996, he made over 50 short films on super-8. He lived in New York from 1981-82, working for Arleen Schloss' off-space "Wednesdays At A's". Formerly known as Angela, Hans put his name on the map with the "Queer Avantgarde" transmedia feature films "Flaming Ears" ('Rote Ohren fetzen durch Asche') and "Dandy Dust". He spent 16 years living in London, where he became part of the queer and transgender artists' scene. In 2003, he completed his postgraduate Master Studies of Fine Arts at the Central Saint Martins College of Art&Design. Hans Scheirl has been living in Vienna since 2005. In 2006, he received the Government Scholarship for Fine Arts. In the autumn of that year, Hans was appointed professor for "Contextual Painting" at the University of Fine Arts Vienna.
